Cleaner required, must have head for heights!!

The daring design of the Nykredit building means cleaners have to have a head for heights

Office cleaners must have a head for heights as well as attention to detail

Seemingly suspended in thin air 50ft above the ground floor, these spectacular office spaces give a new meaning to ‘high-flying’ business meetings.
The heart-stopping meeting rooms in the offices of Copenhagen-based mortgage bank Nykredit appear to be floating in mid-air thanks to their daring design.

Their apparent gravity-defying appearance means office cleaners must have a head for heights as well as attention to detail.
The suspended meeting rooms are cantilevered from the third and fifth floors of the Copenhagen office block.

A spokesperson for the company said: ‘The most striking part of the design has to be the three suspended meeting rooms that are cantilevered off of the third and fifth floors.

As well as the suspended meeting rooms, the building also features glass elevators, exposed staircases, balconies and walkways – creating a lively working environment.

Government outlines plans to promote recycling

North Kent Cleaning Services can recycle for you

The Government has revealed plans to help people to do the right thing by
reducing waste and increase recycling.

The amount of waste going to landfill has nearly halved since 2000, with
household recycling rates now at 40 per cent. However, to encourage more people
to recycle and reduce the amount of waste they throw away, the ‘Review of Waste
Policies in England 2011’ has proposed:

• a consultation on limiting the amount of wood waste that can be sent to
landfill

• a review of the case for introducing landfill bans on materials such as
metals, textiles and all biodegradable waste

• incentives for householders to recycle and reduce waste

• recycling-on-the-go schemes

• scrapping unfair bin fines and taxes

• a consultation on increased recycling targets to 2017 for plastic, steel,
aluminium and glass

A crack down on illegal fly-tippers has also been proposed. Possible
penalties could include having their vehicle seized, or having to clear up the
items they have dumped.

Commenting on the proposals, environment secretary Caroline Spelman, said:
“People want to do the right thing by reducing waste and recycling at home or
out and about and we want to help them.

“This means making sure communities are getting the collection services they
want and not penalising hard-working households who make minor mistakes by
putting bins out on the wrong day or leaving a plastic tub in the wrong
recycling box.

“Communities and businesses can help us become a first-class zero-waste
economy and unlock the real value in the goods that people no longer want.”

Are you alergic to your own office or home?

Are the millions on dust mites in your offices and homes making you ill this winter?

What does a dust mite look like

12 million of these could be living in your carpets!

They are the spider-like creatures eager for your warmth and a bed for the night. They remain invisible to the naked eye. And millions of them may already have taken up residence in your home and offices.

Now the house dust mite is behind an unprecedented rise in  allergies, with at least 12 million Britons allergic to their own homes and places of work, according to new research.

Cases of perennial allergic rhinitis – known as “home fever” – have risen dramatically, with dust mites accounting for 58 per cent of all household allergies. The figure has risen by more than 10 per cent over the past year.

The charity Allergy UK polled 1,600 people as part of an attempt to gain wider insight into the rise of household allergies. It showed 31 per cent of the nation was allergic to mould, while 45 per cent cited a pet allergy. Some 30 per cent of people are also allergic to chemicals in cleaning products.

But dust mites remain the largest problem. The microscopic creature is thought to have thrived with the rise of modern homes, especially those incubated by central heating with little ventilation. Their presence is strongest in the bedroom, where a single mattress apparently contains more than two million dust mites.

The situation has become so severe that doctors unveiled audacious plans last month to expose babies to dust mites in an attempt to halt the rising epidemic. Experts hope that exposing babies to the common bug will strengthen the defences of the next generation.

Much of the problem is compounded by people mistaking the symptoms of dust mite allergy for those of a common cold – often seeking medical advice rather than taking preventative measures.

A spokesperson for Allergy UK, said: “The home was somewhere we escape to but for millions is has become the trigger of allergies. Now runny nose and sneezing are in fact the most common indicators of a house dust-mite allergy, so the nation is not treating the root of the problem, just the symptoms.”

More than 21 million people in the UK now have some sort of allergy.

Unwanted bedmates: dust mite facts

* House dust mites measure between 0.4mm in length and up to 0.02mm in width

* The average life cycle of a dust mite is up to 20 days for a male, and 70 for a female

* Dust mites are one of the most common triggers of asthma

* A female can lay 60 to 100 eggs in the five weeks her life

* Prevention includes washing bedding at 60C, steam-cleaning carpets and curtains and replacing pillows annually, and mattresses every 8 to 10 years

Your keyboard is dirtier than your toilet seat!

Lifting the lid on computer filth

How not to clean a keyboard!

How not to clean a keyboard!

Flu germs can be transferred
Office workers are exposed to more germs from their phones and keyboards than toilet seats, scientists reveal.
Work stations contain nearly 400 times as many microbes than lavatories, it is claimed.

Office equipment should be regularly disinfected to prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria responsible for disease.

The reality of our grubby working environments is exposed in a study by the University of Arizona.

A desk is capable of supporting 10 million microbes and the average office contains 20,961 microbes per square inch, according to research.

Desks are really bacteria cafeterias

Charles Gerba, microbiologist
The key offenders are telephones, which harbour up to 25,127 microbes per square inch, keyboards 3,295 and computer mice 1,676.
By contrast, the average toilet seat contains 49 microbes per square inch, the survey showed.

Microbiologist Dr Charles Gerba, of the University of Arizona, who carried out the research, said: “When someone is infected with a cold or flu bug the surfaces they touch during the day become germ transfer points because some cold and flu viruses can survive on surfaces for up to 72 hours.

“An office can become an incubator.”

Dr Gerba’s study found bacteria levels increased drastically during the day, peaking after lunch.

The superhighways for bacteria are hands and the surfaces we touch

Professor Sally Bloomfield, microbiologist
Food spills, such as tea and biscuits, can support mini eco-systems, but cleaning of keyboards and phones is not always given high priority.
Dr Gerba said: “Without cleaning, a small area on your desk of phone can sustain millions of bacteria that could potentially cause illness.”

The study found that where office workers who were told to clean their desks with disinfecting wipes, bacterial levels were reduced by 99%.

British microbiologist Professor Sally Bloomfield said the study reinforced the need for good hygiene practice both at work and in the home.

She said: “The superhighways for bacteria are hands and the surfaces we touch.

“Viruses are transferred by our hands, especially cold viruses.”

She said it was impossible to turn our surroundings into sterile zones, but we can minimise the risk by washing our hands regularly and using alcoholic wipes on office furniture like phones and keyboards.

Invisible germ warfare!

Invisible germ warfare!

When it is visible, we are quick to wipe, wash and sluice it away. But the truth is, most dirt — more than 99 per cent of the stuff — is invisible, odourless and unnoticed.

While we clean the obvious places, such as our baths and lavatories with rigour, few of us pay much attention to more apparently blameless items in our homes — our computers, mattresses, rugs and curtains.

Yet countless studies show that places and objects we assume to be ‘clean’ are often breeding grounds for potentially harmful bacteria and parasites
